Biographical Sketch
Dr. Sharon M. Small was appointed
Chief Executive Officer of Parent/Child Incorporated in September
2006. Dr. Small came to PCI from the position of Principal at
Northside ISD in San Antonio, Texas, a position she held from
2003 to 2006.
Dr. Small is a native of San Antonio and the wife of Ernest Small.
Dr. Small began her education in the Edgewood Independent School
District and is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. After
graduating from high school in 1975, she attended and graduated
from St. Mary’s University in 1979 with a B.A. degree in Elementary
Education. In 1991, Dr. Small attended Our Lady of the Lake University
in San Antonio, TX and received a M.A. degree in Special Education.
In 1996, she attended Our Lady of the Lake University and received
a Masters of Education in Mid Management – Administration.
In August of 2000, Dr. Small began doctoral studies in the Philosophy
of Leadership Studies at Our Lady of the Lake University. Her
dissertation, “The Relationships of Transformational/Transactional
Leadership Behavior of Elementary School Principals with Teacher
Outcomes: Extra Effort, Effectiveness and Satisfaction” was completed
in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree from Our Lady of the Lake University,
was awarded on August 6, 2003.
Dr. Small entered the field of education in the Edgewood Independent
School District in 1981 and continued teaching until the spring
of 1998. Between 1981 and 1998, she taught reading, math, and
grades 1 through 6. In August 1998, she became the Vice Principal
of Oak Hills Terrace Elementary in Northside Independent School
District and principal of Shirley J. Howsman Elementary also in
Northside in April of 2003. She was also a member of several national
and local professional affiliations and received numerous awards
and honors.
