A Message from the CEO
Greetings!
Welcome to PCI as we begin a new venture: The Early Head Start Venture! Some may say it is not new, and it really isn’t. It is, however, the first time Early Head Start has had to stand on its own. This is an exciting time for PCI and Early Childhood Education - from birth to three!
Our theme for the year is “a new day, a new age, a new beginning!” We see a new beginning between what was and what is yet to come. A beginning based on needs of the community, children and families we serve. A beginning based on mutual interests and mutual respect, and one based upon the truth that we’re here for a purpose and need not be in competition. We share common principles -- principles of success, accountability, responsibility and progress; principles of high expectations and respect for one another.
We have a responsibility to join together on behalf of the community, children and families that we seek – an agency where those who are in need are not threatened by a lack of knowledge or a lack of wealth, but stand tall because of the encouragement and support we equip them with. An agency where all children are respected and encouraged to believe that “they can” be whatever they choose to become, understanding that education is a key to success. That is the expectation I hold for this agency and every individual that work for Parent/Child Incorporated. But we can only achieve this expectation together.
One of the most valuable assets to any agency is a dedicated staff. There are 3 goals I challenge each employee to possess: 1) Dare to design PCI for success, 2) Set high levels of expectation, 3) Expect high levels of accountability. I applaud our staff, for they have committed themselves to make PCI’s Early Head Start program the best in the Region as well as the nation.
PCI has launched Project Success, a childcare /CCS/for pay venture. We also have one of the most productive CACFP programs in the city and county serving over 3,000 children daily. We’re growing San Antonio’s Tomorrow!
As I close, all of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort -- a sustained effort -- to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for the community, children and families we serve. We have the power to make early childhood education better, but only if we have the courage to make this day, and this age, a new and positive beginning.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sharon M. Small
